Renal Disease
Common
Signs: Affected dogs
develop increasing thirst,
and become dull as the
levels of waste in the blood
stream (which should be
removed by the kidneys)
rise. There are two major
types of renal condition –
those causing excessive loss
of protein (albumin) through
the kidney tubules, and
those where the tubules
can’t extract the build-up
of waste from the blood
stream.
The best
diets for this condition
have low levels of a high
quality protein and also
have lowered levels of
phosphorus and sodium. Most
have higher levels of
soluble fibre and essential
fats to balance the diet.
These diets can be less
appealing to the dog than
normal diets.
Recommend:
Adult
Maintain
– together with cooked brown
rice (3/4 Maintain and ¼
cooked rice) The Adult
Maintain will give a high
quality protein and all
essential vitamins and
minerals, together with
probiotics and prebiotics
for a healthy gut function
and essential fatty acids.
The brown rice will give a
higher level of soluble
fibre. Mixing the two will
lower the amount of protein
the dog consumes.
