Owning a New Kitten
A
New Kitten
Please
think very carefully before
buying a kitten. A pretty,
lively kitten is a very
attractive proposition.
However, you must bear in
mind that he or she can live
for up to 20 years and
throughout this time you
must give continued
stability and affection to
your cat.
You
will have to make time for
play, grooming and
companionship. You will
have to accept that your cat
may catch birds and other
prey and even present them
to you as a gift! You will
have to ensure that adequate
care arrangements are made
for your cat when you are
away from home or go on
holiday. Looking after a
cat will cost you a minimum
of £5 per week for food and
litter. There will also be
additional expense for
bowls, bedding, toys and vet
care.
A
Bed of their own
Cats are
great preservers of energy
and spend about two thirds
of their life asleep Provide a basket or
cardboard box, raised from
the floor to exclude
draughts and line it with a
small blanket. Give your
kitten a chance to sleep for
a good deal of the day.
Toilet Training
Cats
are naturally clean but a
new kitten needs to be shown
what is required.
Provide a litter tray,
filled with commercial cat
litter. Keep
it in the same place, easily
accessible to the kitten and
made sure it is cleaned
regularly.
Take the kitten to the tray
after meals and
on waking. If there is
access to a garden,
introduce him to it
gradually and he will soon
learn to make his own toilet
arrangements.
Breeding
Puberty
usually occurs around five
to eight months in cats,
although it can happen as
early as four months and as
late as 18 months, depending
on the breed of cat.
Veterinary surgeons tend to
neuter both male and female
cats between five and size
months of age (some will do
the operation at four
months).Neutering has
numerous benefits –male cats
will become less likely to
roam, fight or mark their
territory with urine
(spraying). Female cats can
avoid unwanted pregnancies –
please note it is not
beneficial for a female cat
to have a litter before
spaying, this is a myth).
